How to keep your wood floors clean and beautiful
The best cleaning routine starts with the finish on your floor. Odie's Oil and Rubio Monocoat are different systems: use the cleaner recommended for the finish you actually have.
The simple everyday routine
- Sweep or vacuum grit with a floor-safe soft attachment; grit can scratch the surface.
- Wipe spills promptly. For routine cleaning, use a lightly damp microfiber cloth or mop rather than leaving standing water on the boards.
- Put mats at entrances and pads under furniture, and follow the finish maker's cure-time guidance before wet cleaning a newly finished floor.
Floors finished with Odie's Oil
Odie's Oil · Finish and care
For Odie's treated wood, the maker describes mixing 2% Odie's cleaning concentrate with 98% water in a spray bottle for a wipe-and-dry cleaner. Clean a small area with a lightly damp cloth, then dry it. Odie's also lists a 1% mix for light-duty wipe downs on its newer All-In-One concentrate page; follow the label for the exact bottle you buy. Clean water is the manufacturer's requirement; distilled water is optional if you prefer it for mixing. Do not flood wood floors. Read Odie's cleaning FAQ.
Odie's Universal Oil is a finish, not a daily floor cleaner. Its floor instructions discuss occasional spot touch-ups after cleaning, with all excess oil wiped away. Follow the product and floor instructions for application and curing. Oil-soaked rags require the maker's fire-safe disposal precautions. Read Odie's wood-floor instructions.
Floors finished with Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C
Rubio Monocoat · Finish and care
Rubio recommends plain water, Rubio Monocoat Soap, or Surface Care Spray for its interior oil-finished wood. Its Soap is a concentrate used to make a Surface Care cleaning mix at 1 part Soap to 100 parts water; the maker also gives ½ tablespoon in a 750 mL spray bottle. Lightly damp clean, remove loosened dirt, and allow the floor to dry. Rubio advises against using Soap or Surface Care more than once a week. Check Rubio's mixing directions and floor-care guide.
Do not substitute Odie's cleaner, vinegar, or a general-purpose “natural” cleaner for Rubio's specified care system on a Rubio finished floor. Natural ingredients alone do not tell you whether a product is compatible with a particular finish.
